Mendat's Reinforcements
During age 12, the students of the Academy were introduced to three new characters who had been called in by Mendat to assist in the children's training.
First was Baleron Kelluvium, a decorated soldier who hails from Ristania and has had previous dealings with Ire. Baleron may not be too clever, but his talent for battle and military strategy may be the finest in all of Galen Tur.
Next was Hadrim Ai Mudar, the powerful Psionic. Hadrim has such a mastry over the secret powers of the human brain that he can actually use his mind to crush opponents, alter reality around them, or beguile their senses. He is fastidious and soft-spoken, but also intently focused on his task.
Finally, Bran Canwr (a.k.a. Bran the Wanderer). Bran is a man who has been everywhere and seen anything. As a bard, he has travelled the length and breadth of Galen Tur and many other lands learning their secrets and entertaining all those he encounters. Though he seems on the surface to be a flighty, spindly old musician, when the battle is joined Bran turns into a blur of impossible acrobatics and deadly acurate throwing knives. He loves an underdog and a good song and can't resist an opportunity to entertain.
After meeting their new instructors at breakfast, the children were tasked with a battle royal wherein each fought well and according to his style, but Ire was the last man standing. The three then chose their students based on the performance. Baleron chose Une and Shinjekei, Hadrim chose Ire and Issac, and Bran chose Penara and Lee Chun Su (with a hidden promise to train Mywin, as well).
The children noticed several differences in the teaching styles immediately. Baleron is very military, and strict, even controlling what Shinjekei and Une eat. Hadrim is focused on training, to the point of taking his two students away during free time to train them while the others played. Bran is indulgent and easy-going, encouraging his students to give their best efforts and believe in themselves, but also helping them to extra portions of sweets.
After the first week of training, the three teachers get into a dispute over whose students are the most talented and it is decided to settle the fight with another battle exercise. In this event, each team is allowed to make one stipulation. Baleron's boys order that the fight must be outside in the searing summer heat. Hadrim's disciples demand that they begin on higher ground. Bran's little buddies stipulate finally that Ire may not use his power to shatter any weapons. However, before the fight begins both Hadrim and Bran give their students gifts that they believe will unbalance the fight in their favor. As the battle progresses, Une and Shinjekei go down quickly. After Lee Chun Su falls, there is a standoff between Ire and Issac, and Mywin (Penara had refused to take part in the exercise, as she thought it was pointless). The event quickly falls apart as the three instructors begin to accuse each other of cheating. Their argument draws Mendat's attention, who appears and hands out repremands for all involved.
In the end, each instructor is "punished" by having to switch students for 3 weeks. Bran is saddled with Une and Shinjekei, Hadrim with Lee Chun Su and Penara, and Baleron is given Ire and Issac. Finally as Lee Chun Su returns to his room, he finds Shinjekei and Une waiting there to deliver a message. We see a different, almost scary side of Shinjekei as he expresses his disappointment in Lee Chun Su for "cheating" in the event. He says he is tired of being punished for other people's misdeeds and he does not want Lee Chun Su to forget that it is not wise to upset his Captain and friend.
